This Day in Aviation History.
March 6, 1946

Bell 47 becomes first commercially certified helicopter.

Developed from the Model 30 helicopter of 1943, the Model 47 first flew December 8, 1945. Variations of this model continued in production until 1976. The last model was built in Italy as the Augusta Bell 47.

Bell 47 helicopters were used in British Columbia for general transportation, emergency evacuation, fire watch, etc. This helicopter was utilized for just about every imaginable task, from VIP transport to rescue. It even pioneered logging by helicopter. Familiar to television viewers, it will be remembered as the busy medivac helicopter from “M*A*S*H 4077”, demonstrating yet another of its uses.
