Vickers ‘Wellington’ medium bomber.
Note the unique geodetic airframe construction, making it possible for the ‘Wimpy’ to absorb an incredible amount of damage, and still remain airborne. The Wellington was built in far greater numbers than any other bomber of the second world war and was the only bomber to have been in continuous production throughout the hostilities. Contrary to popular belief, Professor Barnes Wallace did NOT design the Wellington, as stated in the film ‘The Dam Busters’…(although he was on the design team) Barnes Wallace was, however, responsible for the geodetic airframe. Rex Pierson, chief designer at Vickers, holds the honour of overall designer.
