A row of Heinkel He-100s masquerading as fictitious “Heinkel He-113s”, 1940. The Germans had around a dozen He-100s, which they painted into several different paint schemes to give the impression of both day and nightfighter units- down below they are in the markings of the “Blitz Squadron”. It is unclear whether it was to impress the German public or people abroad but it did deceive the RAF, who actually thought it was a real aircraft and there were even RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain who claimed they had encountered the fighter. However, it was soon realised that the He-113 didn’t exist and it was soon removed from aircraft recognition lists.
