Group Captain Leonard Cheshire. OM, DSO and 2 bars, DFC. Victoria Cross
RAF Bomber Command
a.k.a. Lord Baron Cheshire of Woodhall
7 September 1917 – 31 July 1992
Cheshire was responsible for the formation of the ‘Pathfinder’ squadrons, and perfected the technique of target marking using flares. He also pioneered the use of the fast De Havilland Mosquito by the Master Bombers directing a Pathfinder raid, greatly increasing their accuracy. Cheshire was undoubtedly the most important member of Bomber Command during WW2. His contribution to victory is incalculable!
