This Day In Aviation History
May 7th, 1945
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announces the Surrender of Germany.
Just prior to a flight from Orly Field, Paris to Prestwick, Scotland, Sgt. Jack Kinyon, an Air Transport Command Loadmaster, stands in front of the Army Air Forces Douglas C-54 Skymaster.
Enroute on that four-hour flight, the radio operator reported that Churchill was on the radio with the surrender announcement. They landed at Prestwick about 4 PM to jubilant Scots who had been at war since September 1, 1939. Celebrations went on well into the night. All were happy to see the war winding down. It finally ended with the Japanese surrender a few months later.
