P-47 Thunderbolt Jacky’s Revenge, RIP

Took these shots at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island, NY last May during the Memorial Weekend festivities.

I’m very sad to learn that this plane crashed into the Hudson River last evening killing her pilot. May he rest in peace.

A terrible loss indeed, not only the painful loss of human life but a sad end to this beautiful vintage warbird, a long time survivor to be sure.

The P-47 was used extensively during World War II. The Thunderbolt was armed with eight 0.50-caliber machine guns — four per wing — and could carry a bomb load of 2,500 pounds. Thunderbolts were built by Republic Aviation at its East Farmingdale plant between 1941 and 1945.
