Texan Tuesday!

If you follow Texan Thursday, then you know I discussed the fact that some Texans were equipped with a rear seat that could be swiveled to face rearward and a rear canopy that folded up over the rear seat allowing an unobscured view to the rear of the aircraft. I mentioned they made great air-to-air photography platforms. Here is an example! Now, you could get this same shot out of a standard fixed rear seat, but anyone that has tried knows its very awkward. In a fixed seat Texan, you have to unlock your seat harness, and twist at the waist against the seat shoulder straps. Once twisted into position, you now have to bring the camera up to your face and depress the shutter. Take my word for it, this is very difficult to do when you are shooting over your right shoulder. Shooting like this over your left shoulder is a bit easier. But, use a Texan with the gunner’s seat and a shot like this requires no twisting yourself up into a pretzel!

This photo was taken on a early morning flight out of Culpeper Airport. The near aircraft is an AT-6D and the far aircraft a T-6G.
