Mustang Monday!

The P-51 Mustang, one of the most successful USAAF fighters, was actually designed of the British Royal Air Force. In 1939 the British had asked North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40s for the RAF. Dutch Kindleberger, president of NAA, convinced the Brits that he could design and build an all new, better performing fighter in the 120 days that it would take NAA to tool up to manufacture the P-40. The Brits took Kindleberger at his word. In 102 days, the engineless P-51 prototype rolled out of the NAA factory. 18 days later, that first Mustang, now with an Allison V-1710 engine, made its first flight!
