Sorceress Saturday?!

Today’s aircraft is the Sorceress, the winningest racing biplane in history. The Sorceress was designed and built by Lee and Mickey Mahoney and first raced in 1970. It was the first biplane to exceed 200 mph on a closed course and reached 245 mph in level flight. This unique staggerwing biplane, weighing only 700 lbs empty and 1,100 lbs full, was powered by a 135 hp air-cooled four cylinder Lycoming engine. The aircraft was sold to racer Don Beck in 1972 and raced on and off until 1983. Beck donated Sorceress to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in 1984. The aircraft is currently displayed at the Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
