Shock Wave
Toby towards the end of the photo pass. Note the thin, dark line running vertically just behind the right wing tip. What you are seeing is light being refracted by the difference in pressure caused by the transonic shock wave. During certain lighting conditions, you’ll see the light refraction caused by the shock wave in photographs. It’s too fleeting to see with the naked eye. Under th…e right conditions, water vapor will condense along the shock wave forming a vapor cone. If you look really closely at this photo, you can just make out another shock wave just above canopy.
