Since we have been talking about the United Flight 1175 incident: Here is a photo of a B777-200 which shows the engines with their fan cowls opened up.

The fan cowls on N773UA were ripped away, as well as the entire inlet section. This gives some idea of what was missing in the passenger taken photos.
