Texan Thursday!
Did you know that during World War II, the German Luftwaffe used Texans? On 21 February 1939, the French ordered 230 NA-57 variants of the Texan. By June of 1940 the French had 222 of those aircraft training its pilots. It’s estimated, that when Germany invaded France, they captured at least 100 of these aircraft. The Germans continued to use the Texans as trainers and squadron hacks until late in the war.
Today’s photo has nothing to do with those Nazi Texans, It’s a Navy SNJ-5C. The C in the designation indicates that this aircraft could be equipped with a tail hook and used to train pilots to land aboard aircraft carriers. I took the photo a Culpeper Airport after a rain storm had gone through.
