Mustang Monday!
This photo was taken at Manassas Airport in 2007 and is one of my personal favorite photos.
This Mustang is painted to resemble a P-51B “Bald Eagle” flown by Lt. Robert Eckfeldt during World War II. Eckfeldt’s P-51 was assigned to the 374th Fighter Squadron, 361st Fighter Group ‘Yellow Jackets’ based at Bottisham, England.
The 361st FG was activated at Richmond Army Air Field, Virginia in February of 1943. In May of ’43 the Group moved to Langley Field, Virginia. The Group moved to Camp Springs Army Air Base in July of ’43. In September of ’43 the Group moved back to Richmond Army Air Field in anticipation of being deployed to England. The Group arrived at Bottisham, England in late November and the Group flew it’s first combat mission in January of 1944.
