This Day in Aviation History
November 5th, 1959
A fire developed during the 4th free flight of the North American X-15.
Scott Crossfield was forced to make an emergency landing after a small engine fire developed. The North American X-15 was not designed to land with a full payload of fuel so the landing broke the “back” of the X-15. After this accident it took 3 months for repairs to be completed.
