This Day in Aviation History.
Capt. Albert Berry makes the first parachute descent from a powered airplane in America when he jumps from a Benoist aircraft flown by company pilot, Anthony Jannus. The aircraft is flying at a height of 1,500 ft. over Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. Berry uses a static line parachute.
Early parachutes were made of canvas, and later of silk.
